My Story

Growing up in small town BC I was fortunate enough to always be a part of activities. The list of life lessons learned from sport is still growing. For the longest time I took many of these lessons for granted with the assumption everyone knew them. This is not the case at all, many of us did not have the priviledge of learning through organized competitive sports. At the root of Colonna Coaching is the sharing of lessons and perspectives to increase performance born from sport and activity.

Hockey took me from small town BC to a larger center in Alberta, showed me all aspects of organized sports and performance being mental, physical, social. Spending time in division both high and low gave me a unique perspective on different mentalities around performance.

The beginning of the decline in my performance came with some major injuries. 4 straight years with major injuries requiring months of physio and what at the time I considered workout to get me back. I never did, never really returned to where I was before. After the 3rd shoulder separation I was fortunate enough to srtart working with a highly trained athletic coach that completely changed my outlook on workouts, fitness and performance. This ultimately is where I started to realize that this type of impact is what I wanted to Instill in others. In the 3.5 years with my coach we completely changed my body composition, rehabilitated my shoulder strength better than years of physio had, increased control, speed, balance, power, and in turn overall performance. This was the foundation for the approach I now use with Colonna Coaching.

However when sport was no longer a part of my life or identity, my habits dictated a large decline in performance both physically and mentally. Through lack of purpose and identity I allowed myself to become someone I would now view as unregonizable. Overweight, negative, irritable, seeking distractions through partying which included nights of binge drinking and horrible food. This was my state for the better part of 5 years. It took one September of bending over to tie my skates at hockey...and struggling to do so to realize just how far away I had gotten from who and what I knew i should be. So the next day I got to work. Brought food to work, worked out over my lunch breaks everyday, cut back on going out and drinking. Fast forward 12 months, down 40 lbs, elevated mood and performance, increased daily acitivities, mood, and healthy socializing.

The crazy part here is that I had all the tools, all the knowledge and know how. I just lost a part of my identity in sport and it took a very low point
